User interfaces for mobile navigation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose The aim of this work is to explore the use of lightweight but effective user interfaces for mobile navigation and wayfinding in urban environments. Design/methodology/approach – Two interactive mobile interfaces were designed and implemented following a user centred approach. The first interface makes use of 2D digital technology such as different representations of 2D maps and textual information. To enhance the user experience during navigation, location aware searches may be performed indicating information about the surroundings. The second interface makes use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics to present 3D maps and textual information. The VR maps are also interactive and contain hyperlinks positioned in 3D space which link to either webpages or other multimedia content. Findings – Both interfaces allow users to visualise and interact with different levels of representation of urban maps. Initial evaluation has been performed to test the usability of the 2D interface, and limitations of the 2D technology were recorded. To overcome these limitations and explore the potentials of alternative technologies a VR interface was prototyped and a pilot evaluation was conducted. Practical implications – This paper provides two prototype interfaces with some initial evaluation that may be useful for future navigation and wayfinding systems. Originality/value – As more and more people make use of mobile technologies and advanced interfaces to enhance access to location-based services, this paper offers two prototype interfaces for personal digital assistants that provide solutions to urban navigation and wayfinding.

Mobile Educational Applications not only provide flexibility in learning, but also allow learners to learn at any time and any place. The purpose of this article is to investigate the effective factors affecting the design of the user interface in mobile educational applications. Methods: Quantita...
متن کاملAudio Navigation: Using Spatial Audio In Ubiquitous Interfaces
An important current movement in computing is towards mobile and ubiquitous interaction. A major research field within mobile and ubiquitous computing is minimal attention interfaces. At present however, there is little in the way of validated heuristics to inform the design and implementation of minimal attention user interfaces. A paradigmatic example of a challenging mobile interaction task ...
متن کاملA Constraint-Based Graph Visualisation Architecture for Mobile Semantic Web Interfaces
Multimodal and dialogue-based mobile interfaces to the Semantic Web offer access to complex knowledge and information structures. We explore more fine-grained co-ordination of multimodal presentations in mobile environments by graph visualisations and navigation in ontological RDF result structures and multimedia archives. Semantic Navigation employs integrated ontology structures and leverages...
متن کاملA New Trust Model for B2C E-Commerce Based on 3D User Interfaces
Lack of trust is one of the key bottle necks in e-commerce development. Nowadays many advanced technologies are trying to address the trust issues in e-commerce. One among them suggests using suitable user interfaces. This paper investigates the functionality and capabilities of 3D graphical user interfaces in regard to trust building in the customers of next generation of B2C e-commerce websit...
متن کاملSupporting Multi-Modal Interfaces for Adaptive Tour Planning
Typical examples for mobile GI services include tour planning and maps for navigation support (Reuter and Zipf 2004). We have developed several prototypes of mobile GI services for navigation tasks including user-adaptive tour planning as well as supporting multi-modal (i.e. graphical, natural language and gestures based) interfaces. As the development of GI services that adapt to user and cont...
